Team Building

Team building is a fundamental requirement for any company that wishes to have a group of individuals work in concert. While it is expected for all employees of a company to work together professionally, a good team that functions in unison is able to reach higher levels of productivity, which is important for any corporation.

There are several ways that team buildingcan be done. Most commonly, members of a team will get together and get to learn one another over drinks or coffee. This is done outside of company time or over lunch, but is not very effective at building a lasting career relationship. Meetings also happen to see where members of the group are at and to brainstorm, but this does not improve the work skills of the employees. The belief that meetings will improve teamwork is a common error by companies.

There are cheap and easy methods a company can work at team building. Challenges, puzzles and games that must be accomplished as a team can be done. These take little company time, and force the members of the team to work together in concert to succeed at the challenge. These can be done as mini events, pitting several teams within the same company against one another. These types of challenges are highly useful at building a team, as they bolster team spirit and a sense of unity within the group.

Team building should be approached as a long term goal. By using games, puzzles and challenges infrequently, coupled with the normal deadlines and schedules of a corporation, teams can be developed to function as a well oiled machine, rather than a haphazard gathering of people with similar skills.

It is important that when team building, you establish what each individual's role in the group is. All teams require a leader, and this person should be assigned as the leader. This will allow someone to take charge of the group, which is vital for success. As a team without a set leader tends to fall astray, determining who has the final say can prevent many problems and disagreements. In groups that are prone to arguments, this can cut back on the friction. The team leader should be someone that everyone in the team respects.

Team building is comprised of many aspects, ranging from the selection of leadership to the ability to work together. However, the majority of the growth of a team is dependent on the members of the team and how badly they want to work together. Establishing the necessity of teamwork can go a long way to ensuring that you have a successful group in the long run.
